Welcome to By Lauren Palmer

Hello there. Thank you so much for checking out my new space. And now perhaps you'd like to know a bit more about what to expect from it? I'm launching By Lauren Palmer as an all-encompassing online home for any stories, essays or thoughts I'd like to share. In the past, I've tried to stick with blogs narrowly focused on particular interests of mine, such as Lettuce Eat Cake, at which I have written about food and fitness. But I have so much to share that doesn't fall under that limited umbrella. Social media gurus advise bloggers to stick with a clear focus and theme for their content, in order to attract an audience interested in that particular topic. But, I'm learning, I don't write that way. I can't churn out posts geared at catering to such a specific audience. I wake up different every day, and I want to tell you about it.

I've been thinking lately about why I write--why I even dare to call myself a writer, when I don't have much to show for the title other than countless rough draft Word files and stacks of half-empty journals brimming with meandering chicken scratch. Why do I feel the need to share my words? What makes me think anyone would care about what I have to say?

While, like many writers, the thought of someday seeing my words in print makes my heart flutter, writing with the goal of publication just isn’t my thing. Singularly focusing on appealing to the masses would drain the life from me, suck the marrow of joy from my work. I want to capture the beauty, pain and wonder I see all around me. I want to capture the awkwardness, the conflicts. I want to capture the moments that sting and soar.

I don’t know if my work will ever amount to anything, but I do know that I want to do it.  I want to write pieces that are vulnerable and personal and universal and lasting, words that are raw and honest and make me proud. Even if my work never reaches anyone, it will touch me. It will change me. My words matter, if only to me.

So if you'd like to join me on this journey, stick around.
